The Problem Isn't Always the Hardware

My door closes, but the latch doesn't line up. Do I need a new lock?
Not necessarily. The problem may be related to door alignment, hinges, the strike plate, or the position of the door within the frame. Replacing the lock won't necessarily correct an alignment problem.
Why does my deadbolt work when the door is open but not when it's closed?
